Our Programs

Come read to a pet in need!

Shelter pets have a lot of anxiety while waiting on their new homes!  Similarly, many students have apprehension about reading in class.  Encouraging students to read to pets helps them read more confidently, without judgment, and eases the pets' fears, making them feel loved while they wait for a home.

Reading Program

Reading programs are scheduled in the fall and spring to coincide with the school terms.  All new students participate in an introductory Doggone Safe presentation to learn behavior cues for dogs, which helps them remain safe in a shelter environment.  Students may bring their own books, or select from our available books during the reading sessions at a shelter.

Benefits

Reading is a core skill for all elementary age students to develop, but it can often be challenging and discouraging.  We find that the addition of an animal audience helps encourage children to improve their skills.  An added benefit is noticed as the animals learn to anticipate the reading sessions and seem much happier.  This can help them find homes more quickly!

RESCUE EFFORTS

As space allows, we are now rescuing a limited number of at-risk pets for permanent placement.  Please contact us if you are interested in serving as a foster pet parent.

SHELTER ASSISTANCE

As funding allows, we are proud to be able to assist local shelters with basic needs.  Currently, we have a campaign to supply a camera system at our local shelter to deter pet dumping. Click here to donate!
